Utah State Correctional Facility

Utah Division of Facilities Construction and Management | Salt Lake City, Utah

As the largest construction project in Utah history, Envision was part of a collaborative team that provided electrical engineering for the $1.05 billion new Utah State Correctional Facility (USCF). The project is comprised of 37 buildings with a total of 1.35 million square feet of operational space located on approximately 190 acres in northwest Salt Lake City.

Electrical engineering services for the entire project included: developing master electrical specifications; developing electrical and lighting design standards; coordinating bid documents for electrical systems separate from the buildings, i.e. UPS systems, fire alarm, and lighting controls; and being an integral member of the architectural design team to professionally address and resolve electrical design and site challenges.

With capacity for up to 3,600 inmates, the design goals for the facility include state-of-the art security and a greatly improved environment for correctional staff and inmates, while reflecting the state’s 2015 “Justice Reinvestment Initiative”. This initiative calls for a reduction in incarceration levels by changing the lives of inmates and providing educational and occupational programs to help offenders successfully exit the criminal justice system.

In addition to the joint design efforts above for the comprehensive project, Envision’s scope of work included engineering design of interior power, electrical distribution, lighting inverters, uninterruptible power supplies, interior and exterior building lighting, lighting controls, raceways and boxes for communications, fire alarm systems, and lightning protection systems for twelve separate buildings.
