Pierre Lassonde Living Studios

University of Utah | Salt Lake City, UT

The $45 million, 160,000 SF Lassonde Studios complex has garnered national press, awards, and accolades as one of the most innovative living/learning entrepreneurial spaces in higher education. At Lassonde, 400 students are chosen to live and work as part of the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute program at the David Eccles School of Business. The facility includes a 20,000 SF ground floor think-tank “garage”, where students can attend live events, use 3-D printers, build prototypes in a metal and woodworking shop, compete, engage in product launches, research, and collaborate. The multi-residential complex also features a variety of housing styles: conventional single and double rooms, urban lofts, and pods.

As the electrical engineers for the project, Envision provided innovative and sustainable design elements to efficiently power the project. For example, daylight sensors were used to reduce light levels and occupancy and vacancy sensors to turn off lights were utilized. The designed energy usage (W/SF) resulted in nearly 50% better than ASHRAE energy code requirements.

The award-winning project was featured in the New York Times and Architectural Digest Online, to name just a few publications.
