L.S. Skaggs Applied Science Building

University of Utah | Salt Lake City, Utah

This state-of-the-art higher education project encompasses both the 40,000 SF renovation of the Stewart Building and the construction of the new 100,000 SF L.S. Skaggs Applied Science Building. The facilities are seamlessly integrated to accommodate classrooms, research labs, offices, and more. This dual-phase project is designed to meet the expansive and growing need to support STEM programs across campus while preserving the historical integrity of the Stewart Building.

Envision Engineering's involvement in this project spans a spectrum of critical services, including electrical power distribution, lighting design, telecommunications networks, and electronic safety and security systems. Our team meticulously engineered power and data systems tailored to the unique requirements of each lab, ensuring seamless operation and safety protocols. Additionally, our expertise in fire alarm and security systems enhanced protection for sensitive experiments and chemical spill incidents.

Navigating the diverse needs of lab users posed significant technical challenges that the Envision team met with proactive, innovative solutions. For example, integrating power, door access control, and lighting systems enabled us to fulfill specific user requests, such as shutting off outlets when doors are open, and lights are on. Envision met stringent energy performance requirements by performing meticulous lighting power density calculations and light fixture selection. Additional solutions included implementing VESDA smoke detection systems in corridors with open ceilings underscoring our commitment to safety and compliance.

Beyond technical achievements, the L.S. Skaggs Applied Sciences Building will serve as a hub for academic excellence and community engagement, fostering collaboration and inspiring future generations of scientists and researchers.
